Etymology: Nicolaus is the Latin form of the Greek name Nikolaos, built from "nikē," meaning victory, and "laos," meaning people or army. The name therefore means something like "victory of the people." It spread across Christian Europe largely through Saint Nicholas, a bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, whose popularity made his name one of the most common in medieval Christendom. Latin writers kept the Latin form, while vernacular languages produced versions such as Nicholas in English and Niccolò in Italian. Scholars who wrote in Latin often used it, and the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus is the best-known bearer of the Latin form.
