Nfl

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. An acronym for a professional American football league consisting of teams competing in gridiron football matches in the United States
  2. Abbreviation denoting the major organization of professional American football clubs engaged in seasonal competitions
  3. A shortened term representing the premier league where teams play American-style football in a structured championship format

Etymology: Football's best-known professional league was founded in a car showroom. In August 1920, representatives of several football clubs met at the Hupmobile dealership in Canton, Ohio, owned by Ralph Hay, and formed the American Professional Football Association. The organization took its current name, the National Football League, in 1922. The initialism is simply shorthand for those three words, pronounced letter by letter as "en-eff-el." Unlike a coined term such as "radar," it has no history beyond the name it abbreviates. The early league was a loose group of teams, many of them small-town clubs with limited finances, so the name was ambitious from the start.
