Etymology: Ancient Greek physicians used "neuron" for sinews, tendons and ligaments, not for the threadlike fibres we now call nerves. The Latin "nervus" similarly meant sinew or tendon before it came to mean nerve. Both words grew from the idea of a tough cord that binds and moves the body. Neurologist is a modern coinage, built from "neuron" and the suffix "-logist," meaning a specialist in a field of study. The ancient Greeks had no such specialists, so the term was created later from classical building blocks to name a distinct medical profession. Neurologists is simply the plural of this noun. It refers to physicians who diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system.
