Etymology: The element known as neptunium was discovered in 1940 by Edwin McMillan and Philip H. Abelson at the University of California, Berkeley. It was the first transuranium element (beyond uranium in the periodic table) to be identified, marking a significant milestone in nuclear chemistry. The name was chosen to continue the tradition of naming elements after planets, following uranium, which itself was named for the planet Uranus. Neptunium takes its name from Neptune, the eighth planet from the sun, reflecting its position immediately after uranium (element 92) on the periodic table.
