Etymology: Nephrops is a genus name coined by scientists in the 19th century, not a word that was ever used in ordinary speech. It was built from Greek roots: "nephros" meaning "kidney," and "ops" meaning "face" or "appearance." The name was given by the zoologist who first described the genus, and the kidney reference is usually explained by the shape of the animal's carapace. Taxonomists of that era often chose Greek names that described a visible feature, and the animal's curved, rounded body region seemed to them to resemble a kidney. The result is a name that sounds like an ancient Greek word but is in fact a modern scientific coinage. Ancient Greeks had no word for this lobster-like creature in this form. The genus name is now the formal label for the Norway lobster, whose common names "scampi" and "langoustine" come from Italian and French culinary usage rather than from the scientific term.

Synonyms: Norway lobster, langoustine, scampi, dublin bay prawn, marine crustacean
