Etymology: "Nephrogenic" is built from "nephro-", the combining form of the Greek "nephros", meaning kidney, and "-genic", from Greek "-genēs" and the suffix "-genic", meaning producing or originating in. Put together, the word describes something that arises from or is produced by the kidney. The suffix "-genic" is the more productive half of the pair. It appears in many medical and scientific coinages, where it marks a condition or effect that originates in a particular organ, substance or process. "Nephrogenic" therefore names a kind of urine production or dysfunction traced to the kidney itself, as opposed to causes elsewhere in the body, such as hormonal or nerve-related ones.
