Etymology: Nationally is about as plain as English adverbs get: the adjective "national" with the suffix "-ly" added to turn it into an adverb meaning "in a national manner" or "as regards the nation". The suffix has a long pedigree. It traces back through Proto-Germanic "-līkaz", a form meaning "having the appearance or form of", and Old English "-līce", which was used to build adverbs from adjectives. Over centuries that ending wore down to "-ly" in Middle English, the form that now attaches to thousands of words. The adjective it joins, "national", is the older half of the pair. It is built on "nation", which came into English from Old French and ultimately from Latin "natio", meaning "birth" or "people born in the same place", itself from the verb "nasci", "to be born". So "nationally" is, at its root, a word about being born into a shared place.
