Nargiles
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A type of water pipe used for smoking flavored tobacco, commonly associated with Middle Eastern culture
- An apparatus for inhaling smoke or vapor through water, typically featuring a long flexible tube
- A smoking device often enjoyed in social settings, where tobacco is heated and filtered through water before being inhaled
Etymology: "Nargiles" is the plural of "nargile," the word for a water pipe in which smoke is drawn through a bowl of water before reaching the smoker. The singular was borrowed into English from Turkish "nargile," which in turn came from Persian "nārgīl," a word meaning "coconut," since early pipes used coconut shells as the water chamber. Here the plural form is used when more than one such pipe is meant.
