Etymology: "Nanoprobes" is the plural of "nanoprobe," a device small enough to operate at the scale of a nanometre, one billionth of a metre. The word is built from two parts: the prefix "nano-" and the noun "probe," an instrument sent in to investigate or measure something out of reach. Together they describe tools that can take readings or act on material far too small for ordinary instruments. The prefix has an unexpectedly old pedigree. It comes from the Ancient Greek "nânos," meaning "dwarf," which passed into Latin as "nānus." English borrowed the form "nano-" as a scientific prefix meaning one billionth, so a word that once described a small person now marks the smallest measurements scientists work with. The unit prefix was not chosen for its dwarfish sense, but the Greek root gives the word its trace of smallness.
