- A species of char inhabiting deep, cold lakes across northern North America, often caught for food and sport
Etymology: The namaycush is a large char found in cold lakes of northern North America, and its English name comes from the Cree word "namekos," meaning "lake trout." Cree speakers were among the first to name this fish, and English borrowed the term directly from them. The Cree word itself descends from a much older Proto-Algonquian form, "name·kwa," which carried the same sense, so the name has stayed attached to this fish across many centuries of speakers. The English word therefore records an Indigenous naming tradition rather than a European description of the fish. Anglers and naturalists who adopted it kept the Cree root largely intact, so the word still sounds closer to its source than most fish names in English do.
