Etymology: "Myelencephala" is the plural of "myelencephalon", the technical term for the hindmost section of the brainstem, the part that contains the medulla oblongata. The plural form is what anatomists use when discussing more than one such structure, most often across different animal species, since the term was applied to the comparable region in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals alike. The word is built from two Greek elements. "Myelo-" comes from Greek "myelos", meaning marrow, the soft tissue found inside bones, and in this compound it refers to the spinal cord, which was long associated with the marrow-like substance of the body. "Encephalon" is Greek for "brain", literally "in the head", from "en" (in) and "kephale" (head). Put together, the name describes a structure that sits at the top of the spinal cord and forms the bridge up into the brain.
