Etymology: Musicologist is a word whose parts tell the whole story. It starts with "music" and adds two suffixes, each with its own route into English. The "-logy" element comes from Ancient Greek "lógos," meaning word, speech, or reasoned account. Greek used it to form names of fields of study, and it reached English through Latin and French as "-logy." The "-ist" ending followed a similar path. Ancient Greek "-istḗs" marked a person tied to a particular activity. Latin borrowed it as "-ista," Old French passed it on as "-iste," and Middle English took it as "-ist." Added to "musicology," it names the person who practises that study.
