Multiwavelength

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Relating to or involving multiple bands of electromagnetic radiation simultaneously ; describing observations, measurements, or instruments that incorporate data from various wavelengths to provide comprehensive analysis ; applicable to techniques that combine information across different spectral ranges for enhanced understanding
  2. Pertaining to the use or study of several distinct wavelengths of light or other electromagnetic waves ; characterizing methods or devices that operate by capturing or analyzing signals from diverse spectral intervals ; indicating approaches that integrate multiple spectral regions to improve precision or detail
  3. Concerning phenomena or technologies that engage numerous wavelengths concurrently ; referring to the practice of collecting or interpreting information spanning various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum ; expressing the concept of utilizing multiple spectral bands to enrich scientific or technical investigations

Etymology: Multiwavelength is a plain technical compound: the prefix "multi-", meaning many, attached to "wavelength," the distance between successive crests of a wave. The adjective describes astronomical or physical work that gathers observations across several parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as radio, infrared, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray, and combines them into one picture. Because each band reveals different physics (cold dust glows in infrared, while hot gas emits X-rays), the combined view can show what a single band would miss.

Synonyms: multispectral, polychromatic, multiple wavelength, broad spectrum
