Multiscreen

Part of speech: adjective, noun

Definitions

  1. Having or involving more than one display screen, such as a cinema complex with many separate auditoriums or a setup that shows content on several monitors at once
  2. Describing something that uses or operates across a number of screens, like a television service or cinema building with several viewing rooms
  3. Relating to a system, venue or device that presents images or content on two or more screens at the same time or in separate rooms

Etymology: Multiscreen is a plain compound: the prefix "multi-", from Latin "multus" meaning "many", joined to "screen". The Latin root reached English through Middle English and is the same source behind words like "multiple" and "multitude", so the prefix carries the sense of "many" wherever it appears. The "screen" half has a much longer history of its own, going back to the sense of a physical partition or shelter before it came to mean a display surface. Combining the two produces a term for something with multiple screens, such as a cinema complex or a device or setup that presents several displays at once.
