Etymology: Moyeu is the French word for a wheel's hub, the central piece that sits on the axle and holds the spokes. Its origin lies in Latin "modiolus," a diminutive of "modius," a unit of dry measure equal to about 8.7 litres, a container shaped like a small bucket. The hub was named for its resemblance to that hollow, cylindrical vessel, so a wheel's centre was imagined as a little measuring pot. The Latin "modiolus" passed into Old French as "moyel" or "moyeu," and the form stayed close to its Latin origin across the centuries. Other descendants of "modiolus" in the Romance languages carry related senses: in Italian, "mozzo" means a wheel hub, and English gained the Latin-derived "modiolus" as a technical term for the central axis of a snail's shell or the core of a structure. The French word is a doublet-free, straightforward inheritance rather than a borrowing.
