Etymology: "Motorshow" is a closed-up spelling of "motor show", a compound of "motor" and "show". The first element goes back to Latin "motor", meaning "mover" or "one who moves", from "movere", "to move". English took it in the sense of a machine that produces motion, and by the early twentieth century "motor" had come to mean the automobile itself, especially in British usage, where "motor car" was once standard. The second element, "show", is an ordinary Old English word with the sense of displaying something to be looked at. Put together, a motor show is simply a display of motor vehicles, and the same pattern gave rise to other exhibitions such as the flower show or the boat show.
Synonyms: auto show, car exhibition, motor exhibition
