Morwenynge
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- The early part of the day, from dawn until around midday, as it was known in Middle English
- The period of daylight that begins at sunrise and runs until noon, an archaic term for morning
- Dawn and the hours that follow it, the early portion of a day in older English usage
Etymology: This is a Middle English spelling of "morning," a variant of the early-morning sense. It belongs to a family of words built on "morwe," the Middle English form of Old English "morgen," which also gave modern English "morrow." Spellings like this one, with the nasal -ing ending, were common before English spelling was standardized. The Old English root shows up in German as "Morgen," which means both "morning" and an old unit of land, roughly the area a farmer could plough in a morning. The same root therefore measured fields as well as time of day.
