Etymology: Mop's origin is unclear. One proposal is that it was borrowed from Latin "mappa," meaning a cloth or napkin, a link the Roman rhetorician Quintilian is said to have claimed. A Modern Hebrew word for a cloth, "mapá," is also offered for comparison. A related group of words points elsewhere. Low German and Dutch have "mops," used for a simpleton or a pug-nosed dog, and English has the verb "mope." These may connect to a Proto-West Germanic root meaning a pout or protruding lip. Whether the cleaning tool took its name from a cloth or from a lip remains unresolved.
