Etymology: Moonlight originally meant only the pale glow the moon casts at night. The later sense of holding a second job probably grew from the image of someone doing extra paid work after dark, once the daytime job was over. The verb is that word with "-ed" added, giving the past form, so it describes someone who has already taken on such night work.
