Montmorillon

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A type of clay that is rich in minerals and often used in various industrial applications
  2. A natural material known for its ability to expand and absorb water, commonly employed in drilling and sealing tasks
  3. A fine-grained soil that swells when wet, frequently utilized in agriculture and construction for its properties

Etymology: A small town in the Vienne region of western France gave its name to one of the most widely used clays in industry. The French mineralogist Alexis Damour named the mineral "montmorillonite" after deposits found near Montmorillon, and the clay family it leads still goes by that name. The name follows the standard pattern for minerals. The place name is joined to "-ite," a suffix from Greek "-ites" that scientists attach to mineral names. The clay's identity is therefore tied to the town itself, not to any property of the material.
