- The largest city in Uruguay, recognized for its rich history, diverse population, and coastal attractions
Etymology: Uruguay's capital takes its name from a hill, but nobody is entirely sure which hill was meant or what the name originally signified. Most agree that the first two syllables come from the Spanish or Portuguese "monte," meaning "hill," referring to the prominent rise west of the city. The rest of the name is disputed. One popular explanation is that it abbreviates "MONTE-VI-D-E-O," read as "sixth hill from east to west," a counting of hills along the coast. Another story holds that a Portuguese sailor, sighting the land, shouted "monte vide eu," roughly "I see a hill." Both tales are attractive, but neither has firm documentary support, and the sailor's cry in particular sounds more like a later invention than a record of what was actually said.
