Etymology: The name means "black mountain," and it was first applied by Venetian speakers to a peak that the local Slavic people called something else entirely. The Venetian "monte negro" translates the Serbo-Croatian "Crna Gora," which referred to Mount Lovćen, the dark, forested massif that overlooks the Bay of Kotor. The Venetians, who controlled much of the Adriatic coast for centuries, used their own term for the region, and that foreign label eventually became the country's name in English. Note that the Venetian version is a calque, meaning a word-for-word translation rather than a borrowing of the sound. "Crna" and "gora" both mean black and mountain in the local language, so the English name is a faithful rendering of the native one, filtered through Italian. The English word is borrowed from Venetian, the dialect of Venice, which carried the name into the wider European languages.
