Monoker
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A person's name, nickname, or distinctive title by which they are known
- Someone's name or the alias they go by, often a colorful or informal one
- A name or handle that identifies a person, whether their given name or a colloquial designation
Etymology: Before it meant a nickname or a signature, this was informal American slang for a person's name, and its origin is unresolved. The most repeated theory links it to Irish, proposing "mo ainm," meaning "my name," as the source. It remains a guess. The Irish phrase would have had to enter American speech in a form nobody has clearly documented. Other proposals have been made, but none has enough evidence to settle the question. What is clear is that the word is an informal coinage whose spelling was never fixed. "Monicker" and "moniker" have both been common, and dictionaries record each as acceptable.
