Etymology: In Latin, "monere" meant "to warn" or "to remind," and a "monitor" was one who admonished or advised. French kept that sense of guidance. Its newspaper Le Moniteur universel, the official government gazette of revolutionary and imperial France, took its name from the idea of a public guide, and the same root gave French "moniteur" its meaning of a supervisor or instructor. In French schools, a moniteur was often a junior assistant who helped a teacher keep order and drill younger pupils. The word then spread to outdoor life, so a moniteur de ski is the instructor who teaches beginners on the slopes, and a moniteur may also lead children at a holiday activity centre. The screen sense of "monitor" in English comes from the same Latin root, but it arrived through a different path.
