Etymology: Moldavians are the people of Moldavia, and the name carries a small but real twist: the English word for the people and the name of the modern country do not match. Moldavia was historically a principality, and its name has been applied to the territory on both sides of the Prut River, so the people it names have been spread across more than one state over the centuries. The word is formed simply from "Moldavia" with the suffix "-an," which marks a person or thing belonging to a place, as in "Italian" or "American." The plural "Moldavians" is the form of "Moldavian" used for more than one person, so it inherits the same meaning: a resident or descendant of Moldova, or someone who identifies with the Moldavian cultural group. The English term "Moldavian" is also used as an adjective, describing the language, customs, or cuisine associated with the region. The plural noun, by contrast, always refers to people, so it is the form you would use when speaking of a community rather than a place.
