  2. An area of wild, sparsely populated coastline in the western Highlands of Scotland, around Loch Moidart
  3. A district in the western Highlands of Scotland, characterized by sea lochs, hills and scattered settlements

Etymology: Moidart is a remote coastal district on the west of the Scottish Highlands, facing the Sound of Sleat and the islands beyond. Its Scottish Gaelic name, "Mùideart," has been linked by some scholars to Norse elements, since Norse settlers held much of this western seaboard, but the exact breakdown of the name is uncertain. The district's most famous episode came when Charles Edward Stuart landed on the nearby coast at Loch nan Uamh to launch the Jacobite rising. The landing site lies just beyond Moidart's southern boundary, so the area became tied to that campaign and to the Highland clans who joined it.
