Etymology: Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, has a name whose origin is still debated. One proposal traces it to Somali: "muuq" meaning "appearance," combined with "disho," a form of the verb "dil," "beat" or "kill." Read together, the pieces would give something like "appearance of killing," though this reading remains uncertain. The other proposal is more striking. It holds that the name passed through Arabic "maqadīšū" from Classical Persian "maq'ad," meaning "seat," and "shāh," meaning "shah" or king. The literal sense would be "seat of the shah," a name that fits a city with a royal or political seat. Because the name's history is unresolved, neither explanation can be confirmed, and the Somali and Persian-Arabic routes remain competing accounts.
