Etymology: Moe comes from the Japanese verb 萌える (moeru), meaning "to burst into bud" or "to sprout," and the English-facing sense uses the continuative form of that verb. The sprouting image was not originally about cute characters. The verb was used for plants coming to life in spring, and in Japanese it could also describe a fresh, budding feeling of attraction, which is the bridge to the fan meaning. In anime and manga fandom, the sense shifted from that growing warmth toward a specific object: a character type whose innocence, awkwardness, or charm provokes a devoted, almost protective affection. The term names both the emotional response and the qualities that trigger it. It is also sometimes tied to how much enthusiasm a character attracts from fans and how popular they become.
