Etymology: "Miswire" is a plain compound: the prefix "mis-", meaning wrongly or badly, attached to "wire." The verb means to connect electrical wiring incorrectly, and the noun names the resulting fault, a wrong connection. The base word "wire" comes from Old English "wir," a metal drawn out into a thin thread. Its use for electrical conductors came much later, once electricity itself became a practical matter, so "miswire" carries the older metal sense of "wire" alongside the modern electrical one. The prefix "mis-" is the same one found in "misread" and "mislead," and it has been productive in English for centuries. Attaching it to "wire" needed no special invention; it is an ordinary formation that simply describes a wire put in the wrong place.
