Etymology: "Mistypes" is the third-person singular form of "mistype", a verb meaning to hit the wrong key while typing. The verb is formed from the prefix "mis-", which goes back through Old English and Proto-Germanic to a root meaning something like "wrong" or "amiss", attached to "type", which came into English from Latin "typus" and Greek "typos", meaning a blow or impression, as in a stamp that leaves a mark. The original sense of "type" therefore concerned physical impressions, such as a die striking metal or a mark pressed into a surface. Its later meanings, including the printed letter, grew out of that idea of a stamped imprint, so that a mistype was once a flaw in the mark itself before it became a flaw in a keystroke.
