Etymology: "Misrecord" is a plain formation: the prefix "mis-", meaning wrongly or badly, attached to "record," so the verb means to write down wrongly. The prefix is Old English in origin and was used productively to build new verbs and nouns, which is why English speakers can create words like this on the spot without any special history behind them. "Record" itself carries the older story. It came into English from Old French "record," meaning remembrance or recollection, which in turn traces back to Latin "recordari," to call to mind, built from "re-" (again) and "cor," heart, since the Romans thought of memory as something kept in the heart. The sense of setting something down in writing grew out of that idea of keeping something in mind, so a record was originally a thing remembered before it was a thing written.
