- One who holds women in contempt and regards them with hatred or scorn simply because they are female
Etymology: The Greek "misogúnēs" combines "misos", hatred, with "gynē", woman, to name a woman-hater. English borrowed it as a learned word and kept the Greek shape almost intact, so "misogyn" is a noun close to its source, alongside the more familiar "misogyny" and "misogynist" built from the same roots. The "gyn" element is the same Greek stem found in modern medical and scientific terms such as gynecology. Those coinages were formed from classical roots, so the family of words is ancient in its building blocks but modern in its English use. "Misogyn" is the rarer of the set, and most readers will recognise it as a variant of "misogynist".
