Misdocument
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To improperly record or note something in documentation
- To make an error in the official recording of information or data
- To misstate or inaccurately represent details in written records
Etymology: The word is a plain compound: the prefix "mis-", meaning wrongly or badly, attached to "document". The verb "document" itself comes from Latin "documentum", a lesson or proof, from "docere", to teach, which gives the older sense of a document as something that instructs or proves. Adding "mis-" yields the simple sense of recording something wrongly. The pattern is productive in English. Many verbs take "mis-" to mean wrongly or badly, such as "misspell", "misread" and "mislead", and "misdocument" follows the same model. Because it is a transparent formation from two parts that are each well established in English, its history is largely that of its parts rather than a separate story of its own.
