Etymology: "Depict" comes from Latin "depingere," meaning "to paint, portray," built from "de-" and "pingere," "to paint." The same root gives English "pigment" and "paint," so a depiction was originally a picture made with brushes before it came to mean any verbal or visual representation. The prefix "mis-" is an older English element meaning "wrongly" or "amiss," as in "misread" or "mislead." Joined to "depict," it describes a portrayal that gets the subject wrong, whether the error is in a painting, a film, a news report, or a written account.
