The formation follows a pattern familiar from words like "minibus" and "minicab", where "mini-" marks something small of its kind. Because "beast" in its traditional sense excluded insects and spiders, the coinage has a slight irony built into it: it stretches an animal word to cover creatures that older usage would not have called beasts at all.
