Etymology: Its most likely deep ancestor is an Armenian word, "mēǰ," meaning "middle" and also the middle of the body, including the loins and waist. It shares a root with Latin "medius," the source of English "medium." Romani speakers adopted a form of it as "minʒ," meaning female genitals, and English took it through Angloromani, the mixed vocabulary used by British Romani communities. Other theories exist. Some have linked it to Latin "mingere," "to urinate," with the organ named after a function, perhaps as a euphemism or a joke. Another suggestion is that it is a corruption of "midge," a small biting insect, though this remains uncertain. Middle English "mingen" and "mengen," meaning "to mix," are also sometimes proposed, but they are not the most likely source.
