Mindscapes

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A mental landscape that reflects one’s thoughts, emotions, and imaginative visions
  2. a conceptual representation of inner experiences and cognitive processes
  3. an abstract terrain of ideas, memories, and feelings that shape an individual's psyche

Etymology: "Landscape" began as a painter's word for a picture of countryside. It was borrowed from Dutch "landschap," a term for a tract of land, and English speakers only later used it for the land itself. The ending "-scape" carries that painterly origin, and English has since attached it to many nouns, giving us "seascape" and "cityscape." "Mindscape" follows the same pattern, joining "mind" to "-scape" to describe a terrain of thought, memory, and feeling rather than a painted view. It is a modern compound built by analogy with those older forms, and its meaning depends on treating the inner life as a territory that can be surveyed, much as a countryside can.
