Etymology: The word's core sense is surprisingly literal: a "minder" was once simply someone with a good memory. Middle English "mynder" and "mendowre" meant one who remembers, and by extension one who bears something in mind or keeps watch over it. The sense of guarding or looking after someone came from that idea of keeping a person or thing in one's thoughts and attention, so a minder is, at root, a rememberer who keeps watch. The construction is plain: "mind" plus the agent suffix "-er", the same ending found in "baker" or "teacher". The meaning gradually shifted from attentiveness toward protection, and the modern sense of a hired companion who supervises or guards someone, whether a child, a celebrity or a piece of equipment, grew out of that older idea of watching over.
