Middys
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A woman's or child's blouse with a sailor collar and typically a square neckline, often worn as part of a naval-inspired outfit
- A sailor-styled blouse featuring a broad collar and usually a loose fit, popular as a casual or nautical-themed garment
- A short jacket or top with a distinctive sailor's collar, commonly associated with navy or seaside fashion
Etymology: "Middys" is an alternate plural of "middy," a clipped form of "midshipman," the young trainee officer on a naval ship. "Midshipman" combines "midship," the middle section of a vessel where such young men were berthed, with "man." The clipped form was later applied to the loose, square-collared sailor blouse modeled on the midshipman's uniform. The more common plural spelling is "middies."
