Etymology: "Microsculpted" is a modern coinage built from "micro-", from Greek "mikros" meaning "small", and "sculpted", the past participle of "sculpt", which comes through French "sculpter" from Latin "sculpere", "to carve". The prefix "micro-" was used as a combining form in English scientific and technical writing from the late 19th century, and its use grew steadily in the 20th century as technology made tiny scale work possible. The verb "sculpt" itself was borrowed into English only in the 19th century, from the French "sculpter", so the older English word for the same activity, "sculpture" carved or shaped, came into the language centuries earlier. "Microsculpted" is a participle and adjective: something shaped by carving at a very small scale, such as a surface etched with fine detail.
