Microrobotic

Part of speech: adjective

Definitions

  1. Relating to the design, construction, and application of tiny robots capable of precise tasks at a microscopic scale; involving technology that integrates mechanical systems at minuscule dimensions for specialized functions; pertaining to robotic devices engineered to operate within microenvironments for purposes such as medical or industrial use
  2. Concerned with miniature automated machines likely used in environments too small for human intervention; involving the fabrication and control of robots on a scale so small they require microengineering techniques; describing systems that employ microscopic robotics for delicate or intricate operations in varied fields
  3. Associating with the field of tiny electromechanical devices that perform specific actions in microscopic spaces; embracing the science and technology behind creating robots of minuscule size with precise movement and control; involving the study and development of ultra-small robotic systems often used in specialized scientific or medical applications

Etymology: "Microrobotic" is a plain compound: "micro-", from Greek "mikros" meaning "small", joined to "robotic", the adjective form of "robot". The prefix "micro-" was productive in English throughout the twentieth century, attaching to all sorts of nouns to mean "on a very small scale", as in "microchip" or "microscope" (which is an older Greek-derived word, not a formation of this kind). The base "robotic" is the more interesting half. "Robot" was coined by the Czech writer Karel Čapek for his 1920 play "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots), where the word came from "robota", a Czech term for forced labour. Čapek's word spread quickly into English, and "robotic" followed as its adjective. Put together, "microrobotic" describes work or machines at a scale where ordinary robots would be too large, and it was formed in the same spirit as the other "micro-" compounds that filled technical vocabulary in the late twentieth century.
