Etymology: "Microcycle" is a plain compound of two existing parts: "micro-", from Greek "mikros" meaning "small", and "cycle", from Greek "kyklos" meaning "circle" or "wheel", which came into English through Latin and French. Put together, the word denotes a short cycle, a small repeating unit within a longer programme. In sports training, the idea is that a large plan, such as a year of preparation for a championship, is broken into nested cycles. The longest unit is the macrocycle, the medium block is the mesocycle, and the shortest repeating unit is the microcycle, typically lasting about a week. Its use in this sense follows the same logic as the older compound "microcosm", which applies the "micro-" prefix to a small world.
