Etymology: The most useful fact here is how the parts were assembled. "Blog" began as a clipped form of "weblog," which itself joins "web" and "log," a word for a record kept in a ship's logbook. "Micro-" is the Ancient Greek prefix meaning "small," taken from "mīkrós," and it was attached to "blog" in English to describe much shorter posts than a traditional blog entry. The result is a modern compound built from old pieces: "world" and "wide" lie behind the web, and "book" and "log" lie behind the logbook, so the word's ancestors include both a ship's record and a global network. Its plural, "microblogs," is simply the noun with its usual ending, referring to several such posts or the services that host them.
