Etymology: "Microblogging" is a plain compound: "micro-" from Ancient Greek "mikros", meaning "small", joined to "blogging", the activity of posting entries on a web log. The result describes publishing very short online updates rather than long posts. The prefix "micro-" follows the same Greek root that gave English words like "microscope" and "microphone", and in such formations it signals smallness in scale or size. A "blog" was itself a shortening of "weblog", so the new word stacks two contractions: the Greek prefix for small, attached to a term already built from a shortened "web log".
