Etymology: "Messify" is "mess" plus the suffix "-ify," which means "to make" or "to cause to become." So it literally means "to make into a mess." The surprising part is the older sense of "mess." It once meant a portion of food, especially a dish served to a group at table. That came through Old French "mes," meaning a course or serving, from Latin "missus," "sent," the past participle of "mittere," "to send." Food was literally sent out to the table, and the sense of "a group eating together" followed. The modern meaning of disorder grew out of that: a dish of food, carelessly served, could look like a jumble.
