Mesembria
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A genus of flowering plants known for their succulent leaves and vibrant flowers, often found in drought-prone regions
- A type of hardy succulent within the family Aizoaceae, typically adapted to arid climates and valued for ornamental use
- A plant group characterized by fleshy foliage and colorful blooms, commonly cultivated in gardens for decorative purposes
Etymology: In Greek, "mesembria" meant "midday" or "noon," formed from "mesos" ("middle") and "hēmera" ("day"). It described the hottest part of the day, when the sun stands highest. Botanists took the term for a genus of succulents whose scientific name, "Mesembryanthemum," joins it to "anthemon," Greek for "flower." The name is a reference to the blooms, which many species open in strong sunlight around midday. The genus is now part of the wider family Aizoaceae, and its fleshy-leaved members are commonly called mesembs.
