Etymology: In Homer's "Odyssey," Odysseus left his old friend Mentor in charge of his household when he sailed for Troy. When Odysseus's son Telemachus set out to find his father, the goddess Athena took Mentor's form and guided him on the journey, so the name came to mean a trusted guide. "Mentorings" is the plural of "mentoring," a noun formed from the verb "to mentor." English adopted the name as a common noun for a wise adviser, and the verb and its derived nouns followed from that sense. The plural form is used for separate instances of guidance, such as a series of sessions.
