Etymology: "Melanotic" is a modern scientific coinage, built in English from Greek roots rather than handed down from classical antiquity. The first element comes from Greek "melas," meaning "black" or "dark," which also appears in "melanin," the dark pigment itself. The suffix "-otic" is a formative used in medical and biological terms to mean "relating to" or "characterised by," so the whole word means having or relating to dark pigmentation. Ancient Greek writers had no use for this word, and its meaning is tied closely to the pigment it describes. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, anatomists and pathologists described tissues, tumours and cells by how much dark pigment they held, and "melanotic" became a precise clinical adjective for those cases. It is most often met in medical writing, where it distinguishes, for example, a melanotic growth from one without pigment.
