Etymology: "Matres" is the plural of "mater", so it is the Latin word for "mothers" in the sense of several mothers at once. "Mater" itself comes straight from Latin "māter", meaning "mother", and English took it up in its own right, partly through Late Middle English "matere". It is a doublet of "mata" and of "mother", meaning the three words are separate descendants of the same ancient root, which is why "mother" and "mater" look so alike despite one coming through the everyday English route and the other through Latin scholarship. The word "mater" also gave English "matrix", a word whose literal sense was "womb" before it came to mean a mould, a grid of numbers, or a place where something develops. So the family of words descended from "māter" includes a term for the place of origin and a term for a framework that shapes what comes out of it.
