Etymology: Marrakech is the name of a city in southern Morocco, and English took it from French, which in turn took it from Arabic "marrākuš". The Arabic form is where the trail gets murky: its ultimate origin is uncertain, and the city's name is one of those place names whose meaning has been argued over without settling. What is clear is that the word and the country name "Morocco" are doublets, two forms of one source that reached English by different routes. "Morocco" came through Italian and Spanish from the same Arabic root that gave the city its name, so the two words are close relatives rather than unrelated names for the same place.
